Lagos hosts Beninese President for landmark diplomatic engagement
Nigeria’s top political leadership gathered in Lagos on June 1st to welcome Romuald Wadagni, the newly elected President of Bénin, marking his first international visit since assuming office.
The Beninese Head of State received a formal welcome at the presidential pavilion of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, where Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, Governor of Lagos State, personally greeted him.
The Bénin Presidency highlighted the significance of this gesture, stating: «The solemnity of this reception reflects the Nigerian authorities’ keen interest in the emergence of new Beninese leadership and the renewal it embodies.»
During his brief stay, President Wadagni held a high-level meeting with Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria’s President, at the State House. The two leaders engaged in in-depth discussions on key bilateral cooperation areas—including security, trade, and regional integration—conducted in a spirit of transparency and shared vision, as confirmed by official Beninese sources.
Bénin and Nigeria have maintained deep-rooted interdependent ties across economic, cultural, and other vital sectors for decades. This visit is poised to reinforce and redefine the Cotonou-Abuja partnership, paving the way for fresh collaborative opportunities, according to the new Beninese administration.
The trip underscores the guiding principles of President Wadagni’s seven-year term: a proactive, proximity-driven foreign policy dedicated to enhancing collective sovereignty across West Africa, as outlined by both the Beninese Presidency and Protocol authorities.
As West Africa’s largest economy, Nigeria stands as Bénin’s top trading partner. The latter’s economy, heavily reliant on agriculture and services, depends significantly on its neighbor for stability and growth.
