Côte d’Ivoire reaffirms unwavering support for Morocco’s Sahara autonomy initiative

In a significant diplomatic gesture, Côte d’Ivoire has once again voiced its strong backing for Morocco’s autonomy proposal as the optimal resolution to the Sahara dispute. This commitment was clearly articulated during a high-level regional seminar organized by the United Nations’ Special Committee on Decolonization (C24) in Managua.

The Ivorian delegation emphasized the credibility and legitimacy of the Moroccan initiative, which has garnered the endorsement of nearly 130 countries worldwide. They underscored its alignment with international law principles and relevant United Nations resolutions, particularly highlighting the recognition conferred by UN Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted in 2025.

Political and socioeconomic benefits highlighted by Abidjan

Ivorian representatives stressed that the autonomy plan would empower local populations in southern provinces to actively participate in managing their own affairs, both politically and economically. They pointed to regular democratic elections and the involvement of locally elected officials in international forums as tangible evidence of progress.

The delegation also praised advances in human rights protections, citing the role of regional commissions and collaboration with UN mechanisms. Concurrently, Côte d’Ivoire raised concerns about the situation in the Tindouf camps, advocating for a comprehensive population census.

In closing, Abidjan reiterated its steadfast commitment to a UN-led political solution, urging all parties to embrace compromise and pragmatism to achieve a sustainable resolution to the decades-long dispute.
