Tragic incident near ORTM headquarters leaves two dead in Bamako
Two young men were fatally shot by military personnel near the headquarters of Mali’s national broadcaster, the Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision du Mali (ORTM), in Bamako during the early hours of Thursday morning. The incident occurred around 5:30 AM at a heavily secured checkpoint near the broadcaster’s premises, which also houses a prominent hotel in the capital.
The encounter unfolded as two individuals on a motorcycle allegedly attempted to breach the secured perimeter surrounding the ORTM, according to military authorities. However, local accounts suggest the victims were seasonal workers heading to their construction site in the area.
The shooting has sparked mixed reactions among residents, many of whom have grown accustomed to the frequent checkpoints that dot the city in response to ongoing security threats. While some support the military’s decisive action, others question whether alternative measures could have been taken to avoid the fatal outcome.
Security measures heightened after deadly confrontation
In the aftermath of the shooting, military checkpoints around the ORTM and other key locations in Bamako have been reinforced. The Bamako Senou International Airport has also tightened security, restricting access to travelers and authorized personnel only. These measures follow recent clashes between the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) and militants from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), which included simultaneous attacks in seven localities across the country, including the capital.
Military officials stated that the two individuals failed to heed warning shots after allegedly forcing their way through the first checkpoint. The authorities maintained that the agents acted within their rights, given the heightened security protocols in place.
A local driver, who preferred to remain anonymous, expressed understanding for the soldiers’ actions, stating, « Everyone knows that in these uncertain times, no one should attempt to pass through this area without authorization. The checkpoints are closed for a reason. If alerts are issued, people must stop to avoid trouble. I believe the soldiers were justified in their response. »
Calls for transparency amid conflicting accounts
Not everyone shares this perspective. Seyba, a resident of Bamako, argued that the soldiers could have taken measures to incapacitate rather than kill the two individuals. « Why not aim for the motorcycle or wound them to force a confession? Now that they are dead, we may never know what truly happened. Even if they were suspected militants, their motives remain unclear. »
Witnesses on the scene reported that the victims were seasonal workers en route to their construction site. They suggested that the young men may have been unaware of the strict access restrictions in place at the time.
The authorities have yet to release further details regarding the incident, but security around the ORTM and other critical infrastructure in Bamako remains at an elevated level.
