The devastating Ebola virus disease outbreak sweeping across the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has now tragically surpassed the grim milestone of 500 fatalities. This alarming figure comes from the most recent statistics released by the Congolese Ministry of Health.

Our health officials have documented a total of 1,561 confirmed cases to date, with a tragic count of 506 deaths directly attributable to the virus. On a more hopeful note, 253 individuals have successfully recovered, while medical teams are currently providing care to 628 confirmed patients, either in isolation facilities or hospitalized.

First identified on May 15, this virulent health crisis has since expanded its reach across 36 distinct health zones. These affected areas span the provinces of Ituri, Nord-Kivu, and Sud-Kivu, where the community-level transmission of the virus remains a persistent challenge.

Ituri province bears the brunt of this affliction, accounting for a staggering more than 91 percent of all confirmed infections and nearly 84 percent of the fatalities recorded since the epidemic’s onset, according to official Congolese reports.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has highlighted the concerning rapid evolution and sustained dissemination of the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus. As of July 1, intensive health monitoring was underway for at least 10,821 individuals who had contact with confirmed cases across Ituri and Nord-Kivu, underscoring the relentless efforts to curb the disease’s advancement.
