Gabonese Head of State Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema has confirmed an upcoming official trip to France, scheduled for July 20, 2026. The announcement was made during a national broadcast, though further details about the agenda remain undisclosed at this stage.
Strengthening bilateral ties through high-level diplomacy
This visit follows the resumption of direct dialogue between Libreville and Paris since the conclusion of Gabon’s transitional period. Both leaders are expected to prioritize key cooperation areas including economic collaboration, environmental protection—particularly the Congo Basin forests—human capital development, and regional security concerns.
Since assuming office in August 2023, President Oligui Nguema has maintained an active engagement with French authorities. His most recent official visit took place from May 27 to 31, 2024, culminating in a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace. That encounter had set the stage for renewed cooperation across economic, political, trade, and environmental domains, with special emphasis on biodiversity conservation and climate action.
The 2024 trip also featured a high-profile Franco-Gabonese business forum in Paris, drawing nearly 600 corporate leaders, alongside dedicated sessions with the Gabonese diaspora community. The upcoming July 2026 visit will mark the second official state visit by the Gabonese President to France.
France-Gabon relations: a cycle of reciprocal engagement
On the French side, President Macron has made two official visits to Gabon since 2017, including participation in the One Forest Summit, a joint environmental initiative co-hosted by both nations.
His most recent visit occurred between November 23 and 24, 2025, when he landed at Léon-Mba International Airport and was greeted by President Oligui Nguema. The stated purpose was to acknowledge the completion of Gabon’s transition and to reaffirm support for the new administration within a renewed political framework based on equality and mutual respect.
The 2025 meeting led to the launch of several joint initiatives: capacity-building programs for Gabon’s defense forces, the establishment of an academy dedicated to natural resource stewardship, and French-backed efforts to modernize the Transgabonais railway network.
With the confirmation of the July 2026 visit, President Oligui Nguema underlines Gabon’s commitment to fostering a balanced and forward-looking partnership with France. Following the May 2024 Paris summit and the November 2025 Libreville talks, the diplomatic calendar between the two countries is rapidly intensifying.
