The Patriotic Africans of Sénégal for Work, Ethics, and Fraternity (Pastef) will hold its first elective national congress on June 6–7, 2026, in Dakar. Ahead of this pivotal event, the party’s High Authority for Regulation (HARP) released the list of approved candidates this past Friday, May 22. As anticipated, current Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko stands as the sole candidate for his own re-election as party leader.

Seven (7) candidacies were rejected, with HARP citing either incomplete documentation—such as missing identification or membership cards—or procedural irregularities that could not be rectified after the submission deadline of May 20. The upcoming congress, chaired by Sonko, will not only formalize his leadership renewal but also chart the party’s strategic direction ahead of critical electoral milestones: local elections in 2027 and the presidential race in 2029.

Congress to shape Pastef’s future ahead of 2027 and 2029 votes

The two-day gathering in Dakar is more than a formality—it will define Pastef’s policy priorities and organizational structure for the coming years. With Sonko’s uncontested candidacy, the congress serves as a platform to galvanize party unity and mobilize support before the campaigns heat up. Analysts note that this internal cohesion could prove decisive in Sénégal’s evolving political landscape, where economic and social issues dominate voter concerns.

HARP’s announcement underscored the party’s commitment to transparency, with rejected candidates informed of the specific deficiencies in their submissions. While the reasons varied—from missing paperwork to late filings—the outcome leaves no room for doubt: Sonko’s leadership remains unchallenged within Pastef as the party gears up for its biggest electoral challenges yet.
