The Parti démocratique sénégalais (PDS) has officially declared its opposition to the proposed constitutional referendum. While the political organization, led by Karim Wade, acknowledges President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s decision to consult the electorate, it is calling for a decisive “No” vote and leveling serious accusations against Ousmane Sonko.
In a formal statement released this Tuesday, the PDS detailed its position regarding the upcoming constitutional overhaul. The party expressed approval of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s move to submit these amendments to a popular vote following a period of national dialogue. However, the PDS views this referendum as a vital opportunity for the people of Sénégal to block reforms that it considers a threat to the nation’s institutional equilibrium.
A call to reject the proposed amendments
The PDS is actively mobilizing its members, supporters, and the broader public to participate in the referendum and vote against the changes. According to the party leadership, the proposed modifications appear to be influenced by the personal ambitions of Ousmane Sonko. They argue that such initiatives signal a desire to challenge the republican framework and the very pillars of democracy in Sénégal.
Furthermore, the PDS claims that the leader of Pastef is attempting to spark an institutional crisis. The party suggests that this comes after his alleged contribution to the country’s declining social and economic conditions.
Allegations of institutional destabilization
The PDS asserts that Ousmane Sonko is leveraging state institutions for partisan political gains, describing his actions as an attempt to destabilize the established constitutional order. Consequently, the party has urged the President of the Republic and the judicial authorities to implement all necessary safeguards to protect the country’s institutions, maintain civil peace, and uphold public liberties.
The statement also addressed recent friction within the National Assembly. The PDS condemned the reported physical aggression toward MP Abdou Mbow, attributing these acts of violence to deputies belonging to the Pastef party.
This firm stance by the PDS highlights the intensifying political friction surrounding the constitutional reform project, which continues to be a major point of contention among various political forces across Sénégal.
