Senegal political dialogue: Sonko reaches out to President Faye
Breaking news. Ousmane Sonko, former Prime Minister and now President of Senegal’s National Assembly, has called for urgent political dialogue with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Despite deep political divisions, Sonko reassured that his party, Pastef, will not seek to destabilize the newly formed government.

Sonko challenges government’s political legitimacy
In his first public address since his dismissal on May 22, Ousmane Sonko criticized the new government formed by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. “A country and its government are serious matters,” Sonko declared during a press conference in Dakar. He argued that the newly appointed executive lacks “any structured political legitimacy.” Sonko emphasized that the President must acknowledge the institutional balance of power, particularly as his party controls 130 out of 165 seats in the National Assembly.
Pastef commits to supporting the executive despite criticism
Sonko acknowledged that Pastef could topple the government within 72 hours if it chose to do so. However, he stressed that his party would instead focus on constructive engagement. “We could bring down this government in three days, but we won’t,” he stated. Sonko highlighted the importance of maintaining national stability to reassure investors and prevent further political uncertainty.
Call for constructive dialogue to avert crisis
Facing escalating tensions between former allies, Sonko urged for “intelligent and constructive political dialogue.” He warned against repeating the violent unrest that plagued Senegal between 2021 and 2024. While denouncing alleged provocations against his supporters, Sonko also appealed to youth to remain calm, emphasizing that “peace requires two willing parties.”
