Togo and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) have further cemented their collaborative efforts in the vital sector of higher education. On Tuesday, July 14, in Lomé, Gado Tchangbedji, the Minister of Higher Education and Research, welcomed a delegation from the financial institution for a critical working session. The focus of their discussions was the Project to Support the Implementation of Higher Education Reform in Sciences and Engineering (Paresi).
The comprehensive exchanges provided an opportunity to assess the current progress of this strategic program. Paresi is meticulously designed to elevate the quality of university training and significantly bolster research capabilities within scientific and technical disciplines. Both parties meticulously reviewed the achievements recorded thus far, acknowledged the challenges encountered, and deliberated on the necessary measures to accelerate the execution of planned activities.
During the meeting, the Minister commended the considerable advancements already made. Simultaneously, he urged for greater expediency in handling administrative and technical procedures. This proactive approach aims to ensure that all programmed infrastructure developments are completed within the stipulated timelines.
Key components of the Paresi project include the construction of advanced multi-purpose research laboratories at both the University of Lomé and the University of Kara. Additionally, a new pedagogical laboratory is slated for establishment at the École Normale Supérieure in Atakpamé. These state-of-the-art facilities are expected to profoundly enhance learning, research, and innovation environments across Togo’s public higher education institutions.
Jointly financed by the Togolese State and the Islamic Development Bank, Paresi aligns perfectly with the authorities’ strategic vision to modernize Togolese universities and ensure their relevance to the demands of economic development. The project specifically aims to reinforce educational equipment, upgrade university infrastructure, and cultivate expertise in critical science and engineering fields.
Beyond substantial material investments, the program places significant emphasis on fostering academic excellence. In line with this commitment, scholarships were awarded last year to deserving Master’s and Doctoral students enrolled at the universities of Lomé and Kara.
Through this robust partnership, Togo is strategically working to consolidate its human capital and amplify the crucial contribution of higher education to the structural transformation of the national economy.
