Benin’s President Romuald Wadagni touched down in Niamey on Tuesday for an official visit that could signal a turning point in relations between Benin and Niger, which have been severely strained since the July 2023 coup that brought the Nigerien military to power.

First high-level encounter since the transition

Upon arrival in Niger’s capital, Benin’s head of state was greeted by Niger’s transitional leader, General Abdourahamane Tiani. This meeting marks the first state visit by a Beninese president since the military takeover, underscoring the diplomatic significance of the moment amid ongoing political and security tensions.

A regional strategy of dialogue and proximity

Following his initial stop in Nigeria the day before, President Wadagni chose Niamey for his second leg, highlighting the priority Benin places on strengthening ties with its immediate neighbors. Official sources indicate this visit is part of a broader effort to restore and deepen dialogue across the Benin border region.

Security cooperation takes center stage

Talks between the two leaders are expected to focus heavily on security, as both nations grapple with a rising jihadist threat along their shared frontier. For years, northern Benin and western Niger have faced repeated attacks by armed groups linked to extremist movements active across the Sahel.

Early signs of easing tensions

Hints of a thaw emerged earlier when Niger’s Prime Minister, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, attended President Wadagni’s inauguration in Cotonou. Meanwhile, Nigerien state media has recently amplified narratives emphasizing the deep historical and cultural bonds uniting the two populations.

Next stop: Burkina Faso

After wrapping up engagements in Niamey, President Wadagni is set to continue his regional tour in Burkina Faso—a country governed by a military regime and a close ally of Niger within the Alliance of Sahel States. This diplomatic initiative is widely seen as an attempt to reopen channels of communication with Sahelian capitals and foster a more cooperative regional climate.
