Benin’s renewed commitment to ecological restoration through youth mobilization
The Republic of Benin has intensified its efforts to restore forest landscapes, with the Public Primary School (EPP) Hêkandji in Tori-Bossito serving as the epicenter of the 42nd National Tree Planting Day on June 1, 2026. This flagship event marked the official launch of the 2026-2027 national reforestation campaign, emphasizing a transformative approach to environmental stewardship.
A nationwide mobilization for environmental renewal
The celebration, held under the theme « Youth as forest ambassadors for a greener Benin », has been observed annually since 1985. This year, the initiative unfolded simultaneously across all twelve departments, uniting political leaders, forestry officials, local representatives, development partners, and citizens in a shared mission to reverse land degradation and restore the country’s vegetative cover.
The selection of a school venue for the national launch was deliberate, reflecting the government’s strategy to instill eco-citizenship from an early age. By positioning students as Forest Ambassadors, Benin is empowering its youth to champion environmental conservation, nurture saplings, and promote sustainable practices within their communities.
Rebuilding ecosystems: the 2026-2027 reforestation campaign
In the face of escalating climate challenges—particularly in agriculture and water resources—the new reforestation drive is critical for long-term resilience. While the symbolic planting of the first saplings on June 1st represented a significant milestone, authorities underscored the importance of post-planting care and maintenance.
Local community involvement and technical-financial partnerships will be pivotal in ensuring high sapling survival rates. Through this initiative, Benin reaffirms its international commitments to combating desertification, demonstrating that ecological transition is not a future aspiration but a present-day priority, with a generation ready to safeguard a sustainable future.
