Chile-Morocco parliamentary group strengthens support for un resolution on Sahara

Morocco serves as a strategic entry point to the African continent for Chile, with both nations also recognizing substantial potential for economic synergy, particularly within the agricultural sector.

María Catalina Del Real Mihovilovic, who chairs the parliamentary friendship group between Chile and Morocco, recently reaffirmed the group’s unwavering backing for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 concerning the Moroccan Sahara. This significant declaration was made in Rabat following her discussions with Nasser Bourita, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates.

During her statement to the press, Ms. Del Real Mihovilovic emphasized that Resolution 2797 unequivocally enshrines the autonomy plan as a “serious and lasting solution” to the ongoing dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

She further clarified that the friendship group, comprising members from various political parties, offers its comprehensive support for this pivotal resolution.

The Chilean delegate also highlighted the considerable potential for economic synergy between the two nations, particularly within the agricultural sector. She noted the vital importance of Moroccan fertilizers for Chile’s agricultural output. Conversely, Chile, a major exporter of strategic minerals like copper and lithium, sees these resources as crucial for Morocco’s rapidly expanding automotive industry.

Moreover, the Chilean delegation underscored its nation’s interest in forging strategic partnerships with the Kingdom in other key areas, including seawater desalination, advanced technology, and tourism.

Ms. Del Real Mihovilovic pointed out that the parliamentary delegation’s visit to Morocco coincided with two significant anniversaries: the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and the 22nd anniversary of His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s historic visit to Chile. She stressed that Chile’s foreign policy is a consistent “state policy,” ensuring that their friendship with Morocco transcends specific political affiliations.
