The Diomaye Président coalition has vehemently criticized recent declarations made by Ousmane Sonko in Mbacké during the inauguration of Pastef’s headquarters. Leaders within the coalition have labeled these remarks as offensive towards the Head of State and view them as a clear departure from the responsible conduct expected of a senior institutional figure.
According to Bassirou Dieng, a prominent member of the coalition, such pronouncements are fundamentally incompatible with the principles underpinning a rule of law. Speaking to iRadio, he asserted, « In a nation governed by law, a democracy that upholds its values, or a Republic, it is simply unacceptable for a President of the National Assembly to make certain insulting statements directed at the Head of State. »
Dieng noted that Ousmane Sonko’s statements have generated significant discussion across social media platforms and within the broader media landscape. He stated, « Since his public address yesterday in Mbacké, the entire public, both online and in traditional media, has expressed concern. Virtually no one aligns with his remarks. There is widespread condemnation of Ousmane Sonko’s scandalous comments, » urging Sonko to exercise greater discretion.
Bassirou Dieng also conveyed that the presidential coalition is prepared to respond more assertively to what it perceives as recurrent assaults on state institutions. He affirmed, « The Diomaye Président coalition, for its part, will confront this. Moving forward, we will no longer tolerate or overlook certain injurious statements made by Ousmane Sonko against His Excellency the President of the Republic, nor those targeting other authorities who embody the State. »
This forceful response comes in the wake of Ousmane Sonko’s media appearance in Mbacké, where his comments ignited considerable political debate and drew sharp criticism from within the presidential majority.
