Following a sharp deterioration in bilateral relations, France has completed the withdrawal of all its diplomats stationed in Burkina Faso. The decision, announced by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, comes in response to Ouagadougou’s unilateral decision to sever diplomatic ties with Paris.
All French diplomatic personnel in the West African nation have already returned to France, with the last group departing over the weekend. In a reciprocal move, Burkinabe diplomats in France have been given seven days to leave the country, as confirmed by the Quai d’Orsay.
The Burkinabe chargé d’affaires in Paris was summoned to the French Foreign Ministry last week, shortly after Burkina Faso’s government announced on June 26 its decision to cut all diplomatic relations with France. The move was framed as a measure of reciprocity by the French authorities.
