High-level Morocco-France meeting in Rabat seeks to deepen bilateral cooperation

Rabat hosted a pivotal meeting this morning as Moroccan and French officials gathered for a high-level dialogue aimed at revitalizing bilateral relations. Both delegations emphasized the significance of this gathering, marking a turning point in the diplomatic thaw between the two nations.

First established in 1996 under the reign of King Hassan II, these consultations were revived after a prolonged period of strained relations and the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The past tensions now seem like a distant memory.

A fresh chapter in Morocco-France relations

Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch highlighted the strengthened strategic partnership forged during the French president’s state visit in 2024. He described this as a turning point that has set an ambitious trajectory for future collaboration.

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu echoed this sentiment, framing the meeting as a ‘pivotal moment’ in the effort to ‘scale up relations to a new level.’

Over a dozen cooperation agreements signed

Prior to the plenary session, bilateral talks between the two prime ministers covered critical areas such as security cooperation and counterterrorism efforts. The discussions also touched on the potential for a state visit by the Moroccan monarch to France, which could culminate in the signing of a new bilateral treaty to redefine the Paris-Rabat relationship.

The plenary session concluded with the signing of over a dozen cooperation instruments, including conventions, declarations of intent, and partnership agreements, signaling a renewed commitment to deepening ties.
