The Côte d’Ivoire has taken a significant leap in industrial innovation with the inauguration of an advanced biochar production facility in Attinguié, located in the PK 31 industrial zone on the outskirts of Abidjan. This milestone marks a major shift in how agricultural byproducts are perceived and utilized in the region.

Developed by Valency International, this pioneering project transforms cashew nut shells—previously discarded as waste—into high-value resources for energy and industrial applications. The facility stands as the first of its kind on the continent, capable of processing up to 20,000 metric tons of cashew shells annually, yielding approximately 6,000 metric tons of biochar alongside biofuel and renewable energy through agricultural byproduct valorization.

The inauguration ceremony was led by the Minister of Commerce, Industry, and Crafts, Kalil Konaté, who was joined by key government officials, institutional leaders, and technical partners. During the event, the Minister emphasized the transformative potential of this initiative, stating, “This project exemplifies the conversion of agricultural byproducts into strategic industrial assets, fostering local value creation and sustainable industrial practices.”

Following the ceremony, the Minister toured the facility alongside executives from Valency International and Revata Carbon, reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting cutting-edge industrial ventures that drive job creation and economic growth.

Côte d’Ivoire’s strategic shift in cashew processing

As the world’s leading producer of raw cashew nuts, Côte d’Ivoire is intensifying its efforts to enhance local processing capabilities. This new biochar plant represents a critical step in the country’s broader strategy to maximize economic returns from cashew production while promoting circular economy principles. By converting waste into valuable resources, the facility aligns with the nation’s vision of building a robust, sustainable industrial sector.

The project underscores Côte d’Ivoire‘s dedication to reducing environmental impact through innovative waste management and underscores the potential of the cashew industry as a driver of economic development. With this infrastructure in place, the country is poised to set new benchmarks in agricultural processing and industrial sustainability across Africa.
