A formal complaint has been lodged with the Dakar Public Prosecutor’s Office regarding controversial statements attributed to political figure Ousmane Sonko about alleged illicit funds entering Touba, Senegal’s revered holy city.
In a petition dated 14 July 2026 and filed with the Tribunal de grande instance hors classe in Dakar, the Collective of the Grandchildren of Serigne Touba requested an immediate judicial inquiry. The document, stamped by the prosecutor’s office on 15 July 2026, confirms its official registration.
The complaint was co-signed by Serigne Modou Maroun Niang and Serigne Mourtalla Bousso, who argue that Sonko’s remarks—made during the inauguration of the PASTEF party headquarters—could tarnish the moral and spiritual standing of Touba. Founded by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, the city embodies principles of faith, integrity, and justice as per Islamic teachings.
Demand for clarification and evidence
The Collective is urging the prosecutor to summon Ousmane Sonko for questioning to clarify his statements and provide any supporting evidence. They also seek a thorough investigation to verify whether the allegations hold any legal merit.
The plaintiffs have hinted at possessing video recordings, transcripts, and press publications as potential proof. While they suggest possible charges of defamation or dissemination of false information, these claims remain unconfirmed until judicial authorities assess the findings.
Legal consequences hinge on investigation outcomes
Should the inquiry uncover evidence of wrongdoing, the Collective has reserved the right to pursue legal action against Sonko. However, at this stage, the complaint is purely procedural, with no charges formally filed.
