The former president Macky Sall touched down at the military airport in Dakar on Friday, marking his high-strategic return to a country he led for 12 years.
A ‘express visit’ was announced by The Observer on its July 14 edition, with Sall set to meet with President Yacine Ould Jadeed at the presidential palace after landing from New York.
Sall is not returning to Senegal for a mere courtesy visit, warned Le Quotidien. Instead, he is seeking support that Dakar has so far refused to offer him.
A section of the population and current power holders view Sall with suspicion due to his troubled past. He faces charges related to the hidden public debt, political violence between 2021 and 2024, and is being pursued by the Patriotes africains du Senegal party for fraud, ethics, and brotherhood (Pastef), which won the 2024 presidential election.
Sall was once a key figure in the country’s politics but has been shunned by the current government since his ousting. Despite this, he is now part of the process to hand over the reins of power to former officials, although no judicial procedure has targeted him yet, according to Enquête Plus.
The visit comes as Sall seeks to strengthen ties with Senegal and gain a better understanding of his role in international diplomacy.
