Mali independence day: opposition leader Fakaba Sissoko demands accountability from those who have seized power

On Mali’s Independence Day, transitional president General Assimi Goïta delivered a televised address on September 21, celebrating the nation’s economic progress, pledging to intensify efforts against armed groups and advocating for national reconciliation. General Goïta, who seized power over six years ago without elections and remains in office with support from Russia’s Africa Corps, also reaffirmed Mali’s commitment to the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) as a path toward greater sovereignty.
“Malians deserve tangible results”
His remarks were met with skepticism by opposition figures, many of whom operate under severe restrictions inside Mali. Among those speaking out from abroad is Etienne Fakaba Sissoko, a scholar and prominent critic who serves as spokesperson for the Coalition of Forces for the Republic (CFR), led by Imam Dicko. The coalition brings together exiled political and civil society opponents of Mali’s current leadership.
“I deeply regret that in his address, General Goïta tied the 66th anniversary of our independence to the transitional government’s performance,” Sissoko told David Baché. “One can love Mali, support our soldiers, and defend our sovereignty while still demanding accountability from those who have monopolized power. Malians are waiting for real results: safe travel, jobs, electricity, freedom, and a return to genuine political prospects.”
“The failure to mention Russia and the Russian military’s track record during his speech speaks volumes,” he continued. “Everyone sees the outcomes of this partnership. Just ten days ago, we witnessed the Dioura attack!” He was referring to a brutal assault on a Malian military camp by jihadist forces linked to al-Qaeda, which left over a hundred soldiers dead and dozens captured.
“The country has reached an unprecedented level of decay”
“Today, Mali is a nation in mourning,” Sissoko concluded. “The level of national decay has reached heights unseen in our political history. I cannot celebrate Independence Day when the regime in power fails to honor the nation’s dignity.”
