Already secured a place in next season’s Champions League, Manchester United secured their third-place finish with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford.

Manchester United continued their strong end-of-season form. Facing a Nottingham Forest side already safe from relegation but still reeling from their Europa League semi-final exit against Aston Villa, the Red Devils took early command through Luke Shaw.

The England international, who had gone 34 matches without a goal, opened the scoring in the 4th minute with a breathtaking first-time volley from the edge of the box. Dominant in possession, Michael Carrick’s men created several first-half chances but failed to extend their lead despite multiple clear opportunities for Bryan Mbeumo.

Nottingham Forest fight back

Forest pulled one back against the run of play after the break. Morato capitalized on slack marking to level the scores from a corner (53rd minute). Manchester United responded almost immediately, however, when VAR controversially awarded them a penalty after Mbeumo appeared to handle the ball in the box, allowing Diogo Cunha to restore their lead (55th minute).

Bruno Fernandes matches Premier League assist record

Mbeumo, who had struggled with his finishing, finally broke his duck in the 76th minute when he converted a powerful cross from Bruno Fernandes. His 20th assist of the season put him level with Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne’s Premier League record. Forest kept the pressure on through Gibbs-White two minutes later (78th minute), but Manchester United held firm to secure all three points in a highly entertaining encounter.
