Morocco and UNECA strengthen partnership for Africa’s growth

During a key meeting in Addis Ababa, senior officials from Morocco and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) reaffirmed their commitment to deepening collaboration for the continent’s economic progress and regional integration. The discussions, led by Mohamed Arrouchi, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the African Union and UNECA, and Claver Gatete, UNECA’s Executive Secretary, highlighted shared priorities in fostering sustainable development across Africa.

The meeting emphasized the importance of reinforcing South-South cooperation to accelerate Africa’s economic transformation. Both sides reviewed strategies to enhance joint initiatives, with a focus on leveraging Morocco’s expertise in vocational training and technological innovation.

Claver Gatete praised Morocco’s pivotal role in hosting the 58th session of the Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development in Tangier earlier this year. The event, held from March 28 to April 3, brought together key policymakers to address critical challenges in financial governance and industrialization.

He also commended Morocco’s ongoing support for UNECA’s programs, describing the country as a vital partner in driving continental development. Gatete specifically highlighted Morocco’s vocational training model, which integrates modern technologies like artificial intelligence with industrial needs—a blueprint he urged other African nations to adopt.

Morocco’s model in vocational training and AI integration

The UNECA Executive Secretary underscored how Morocco’s approach to technical and professional education stands out for its innovation. By combining skill development with cutting-edge tools such as AI, the model aligns closely with Africa’s evolving economic landscape. Gatete called for broader adoption of this framework to enhance workforce readiness and industrial growth across the continent.

The meeting also explored ways to amplify the impact of Morocco’s successful initiatives, encouraging knowledge-sharing and best practices to benefit all African nations. This collaborative spirit reflects both parties’ shared vision for a more integrated and prosperous Africa.

A legacy of partnership with UNECA

Since joining UNECA in 1958, Morocco has been an active participant in the commission’s efforts to promote regional economic integration. The country’s consistent contributions have strengthened programs aimed at reducing poverty, fostering industrialization, and enhancing trade cooperation among African states.

Looking ahead, both Morocco and UNECA are poised to deepen their collaboration, with a renewed focus on sustainable development, technological advancement, and inclusive growth. The partnership underscores a collective commitment to turning Africa’s economic potential into tangible progress for its people.
