The Republic of Burundi has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to recognizing Morocco’s full sovereignty over its entire territory, including the Sahara region. This stance was articulated during a high-level meeting in Rabat between Burundi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Integration, Regional Affairs and Development Cooperation, Edouard Bizimana, and Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, as part of an official working visit.
In a joint statement following the discussions, Bujumbura not only reiterated its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative but also emphasized that this proposal remains the most credible and viable path toward resolving the decades-long regional dispute. The Burundian delegation further expressed its backing for ongoing United Nations-led efforts to advance negotiations based on the Moroccan framework.
diplomatic alignment strengthens Morocco’s regional stance
Burundi’s declaration aligns with a growing wave of African support for Morocco’s position on the Sahara issue. During the talks, Burundian officials highlighted the significance of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which they view as a diplomatic milestone. The resolution is seen as formally endorsing Morocco’s autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the foundation for a lasting, mutually acceptable political solution.
This endorsement arrives at a pivotal moment as Morocco continues to expand its diplomatic outreach to consolidate international backing for its initiative. The meeting in Rabat serves as another testament to the strengthening ties between the two nations and underscores Burundi’s role in fostering stability and cooperation in the region.
The joint communiqué also underscored the importance of multilateral engagement in addressing regional challenges, with both ministers reaffirming their commitment to enhancing bilateral relations and exploring avenues for deeper economic, political, and security collaboration.
