Morocco champions political path for Libya at the African Union

Morocco has reaffirmed its dedication to finding a diplomatic end to the Libyan conflict during a session with the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC). Representing the Kingdom, Ambassador Mohamed Arrouchi, permanent representative to the African Union and the UN Economic Commission for Africa, voiced strong support for national reconciliation efforts and inclusive dialogue among all Libyan factions.

Libye : à l'Union africaine, le Maroc remet l'accord de Skhirat au cœur du règlement politique

Arrouchi emphasized that the Skhirat Agreement, brokered by the United Nations in late 2015, continues to serve as the primary framework for a sustainable resolution. He stressed the imperative of upholding Libya’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity throughout the transition.

The Kingdom also acknowledged the African Union’s vital contributions to continental peace, specifically its work in facilitating political mediation within Libya. The ambassador noted the significance of high-level meetings in Tripoli and Zenten, which culminated in an agreement signed in early 2026 between delegates from the Government of National Unity and the administration based in Eastern Libya.

Morocco’s ongoing engagement in the Libyan peace process focuses on fostering consensus between opposing sides. This approach strictly adheres to international law, the Skhirat framework, and the subsequent Bouznika consensus. The Kingdom maintains that a Libyan political settlement is the only viable route, explicitly rejecting military interventions in favor of institutional stability.
