In a significant move to strengthen its national fleet and bolster aviation sovereignty, Air Sénégal officially welcomed a brand-new Boeing 737-800 on September 7, 2026, in Dakar. This latest addition, christened “Gorée”, marks a major milestone in the expansion strategy of the country’s national flag carrier.

This strategic acquisition was made possible through direct financial backing from the government of Sénégal, facilitated by the Ministry of Land and Air Transport under the leadership of Abdoul Ahad Ndiaye. Championed by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the initiative reflects a clear national vision to equip Sénégal with a robust aviation infrastructure capable of supporting its economic, tourism, and international ambitions.

A modern addition to the national fleet

The newly acquired aircraft belongs to the highly versatile Boeing 737 NG family, a single-aisle model renowned for its efficiency on short and medium-haul routes. This aircraft will provide the airline with much-needed extra capacity to optimize its flight schedule and network. It features a comfortable two-class configuration accommodating 174 passengers: 12 in Business Class and 162 in Economy Class, all fitted with high-quality Recaro seats. Measuring 39.5 meters in length with a wingspan of 35.8 meters, the plane is also equipped with three galleys and three restrooms.

The symbolic legacy of Gorée takes flight

Naming the aircraft “Gorée” carries deep historical weight. The island of Gorée, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1978, stands as a global symbol of remembrance, resilience, and reconciliation. By choosing this name, Air Sénégal has created a “flying ambassador” designed to carry this powerful message across Africa and the globe, connecting the history of Sénégal with its diaspora and the wider world.

Boosting tourism and operational capacity

Beyond its symbolic value, the arrival of this Boeing 737-800 is expected to provide a major boost to the tourism sector of Sénégal. By making travel more accessible for international visitors and improving regional connectivity, the carrier aims to achieve several key strategic objectives. These include enhancing overall operational capacity, supporting long-term growth, securing the country’s aerial sovereignty, and delivering an elevated travel experience for passengers.
