Morocco secures first seat at UN general assembly’s upcoming session
The United Nations General Assembly has announced that Morocco will hold the first seat during its 81st session, set to commence in September in New York. This decision was made through a formal drawing of lots during a plenary session, following established UN protocols.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres conducted the random selection, which designated Morocco as the country to lead the opening session. The announcement was made by the UN Spokesperson, who confirmed the selection and highlighted the significance of Morocco’s role in this prestigious position.
During the same session, Khalilur Rahman, Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, was elected as President of the 81st UN General Assembly. Additionally, several countries were chosen to serve as vice-presidents for the session, including the United States, China, France, the United Kingdom, Russia, Egypt, Afghanistan, and Gabon.
The UN General Assembly, as the principal deliberative body of the organization, includes all 193 member states, each with an equal voting right. Its responsibilities encompass approving the UN budget, electing non-permanent members of the Security Council, and appointing the Secretary-General.
This milestone for Morocco underscores its growing influence on the global diplomatic stage and its active participation in multilateral forums.
