Niamey, June 10, 2026 — The Nigerien government is intensifying its engagement in global governance forums. In a strategic move, Dr. Mamoudou Harouna Djingarey, Chair of the Council for National Refoundation (CCR), met in Niamey on June 9 with a delegation advocating for Ms. Nafissatou Idé Sadou’s candidacy to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).

Building a united front for international women’s rights advocacy

As founder and leader of the NGO Femmes Action et Développement (FAD), Ms. Idé Sadou is spearheading a national campaign supported by a dedicated coalition. During their visit to the CCR headquarters, the delegation reviewed progress on the candidacy and explored strategies to amplify public and institutional support across Niger.

The discussions also highlighted the transformative potential of this candidacy for the country. Proponents argue that a Nigerien woman serving on CEDAW would not only showcase national expertise in gender equality but also elevate Niger’s profile in international forums addressing women’s rights and gender-based discrimination.

Strengthening Niger’s voice in global human rights discussions

Dr. Djingarey expressed strong backing for the initiative, urging the committee to persist in their efforts. He emphasized the importance of leveraging Niger’s human capital to enhance the country’s diplomatic influence beyond its borders.

The meeting was attended by key CCR officials, including General Rapporteur Abdou Moustapha and Cheikh Hassane Abdoulaye, Secretary of the Human Rights and Justice Commission.

This coordinated push for Ms. Idé Sadou’s candidacy reflects Niger’s broader ambition to secure greater representation in international institutions. Should her campaign succeed, Niger would gain a stronger platform to advocate for gender equality and women’s empowerment within UN mechanisms, while reinforcing its diplomatic leverage on human rights issues.
