Accusations regarding Casamance peace funds

The Parti Kiiraay Les Patriotes Républicains, a political faction in Sénégal, has publicly accused former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko of mismanaging 3.7 billion CFA francs from the “Jamm pour la Paix en Casamance” account between 2025 and 2026. The party contends that the expenditures lack sufficient justification and appear disconnected from the fund’s original purpose.

In a statement issued on August 25, 2026, the Parti Kiiraay Les Patriotes Républicains sharply criticized the handling of these special funds designated for peace initiatives in Casamance. They allege that Ousmane Sonko incurred expenses totaling 3.7 billion CFA francs from the designated account without providing the necessary detailed explanations for their utilization.

The party highlights that the former Prime Minister reportedly cited the acquisition of vehicles and the refurbishment of the administrative building as partial explanations for these costs. However, Kiiraay maintains that such operations fall outside the scope of the fund’s mandate, which is specifically aimed at fostering peace in the Casamance region.

For the political group, this situation raises serious questions about the consistency of public discourse on transparency and accountability. They declared, « Transparency operates on a variable geometry », emphasizing that all public funds should be subject to identical justification requirements, irrespective of the official responsible for their management.

This public statement from the Parti Kiiraay Les Patriotes Républicains comes after the Constitutional Council’s ruling, which deemed unconstitutional a law passed by the PASTEF-dominated National Assembly intended to oversee special funds. As of now, former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has not yet responded to the allegations made by the ruling party.
