In a televised address from the Republic Palace in Dakar, Oumar Samba Ba, Secretary-General of the Presidency, announced that Ousmane Sonko was no longer Prime Minister of Senegal. All government members were also relieved of their duties.

« By Decree No. 2026-1128 of May 22, 2026, President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye has terminated the mandate of Mr. Ousmane Sonko as Prime Minister, and consequently, that of all ministers and secretaries of state in the government. Outgoing government members are tasked with handling current affairs until further notice », Oumar Samba Ba stated.

Months of escalating tensions between Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko culminated in this decision. Sonko, a former mentor to the president, had initially barred from running in the 2024 elections and subsequently endorsed Faye as his replacement.
