In Senegal, a definitive political separation has unfolded between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and his former associate, Ousmane Sonko, leader of the incumbent Pastef party.

The Senegalese head of state officially inaugurated his own political party this past Saturday. Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who was previously a prominent figure within Pastef, led by Ousmane Sonko, has established the Parti des Patriotes Républicains (Party of Republican Patriots), thereby formalizing a division that has been brewing for many months.

As the nation grapples with a significant debt crisis, the struggle for political dominance in Senegal is now openly declared.

In the weeks preceding this major announcement, a considerable number of Pastef officials, including several regional leaders and members of its youth organization, resigned from the party to align themselves with Faye’s burgeoning faction. Furthermore, numerous individuals from the opposition party, Alliance pour la République, also joined President Faye’s new political movement.

Faye and Sonko initially ascended to power together in 2024, having campaigned under the unified banner of Pastef, an acronym for its French designation, Patriotes Africains du Sénégal pour le Travail, l’Éthique et la Fraternité (African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics, and Fraternity).

Their alliance, specifically forged for the 2024 presidential election, ultimately dissolved due to profound disagreements over crucial policy decisions. A central point of contention revolved around the strategy for negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) concerning a loan program, particularly in the context of Senegal’s severe national debt crisis.

The formal launch of President Faye’s new party marks the beginning of an intense political rivalry between these former allies. This contest is widely expected to significantly impact the 2027 local elections and will undoubtedly shape the landscape for the 2029 presidential campaign.
