The Professional Football League (LFP) has delivered its final verdict on the abandoned clash between FC Nantes and Toulouse FC (0-0) during the 34th and final matchday of Ligue 1. The fixture will not be replayed, and Nantes’ Violets have climbed the standings as a result—a decision that, while less favorable than anticipated, secures their position above Lorient.
Key decision spares Nantes a sporting penalty
The match was halted after supporters stormed the pitch at the Beaujoire stadium, throwing pyrotechnic devices onto the field. Dozens of masked ultras, many linked to the club’s Brigade Loire ultras group, invaded the pitch in protest against the club’s relegation. While the LFP confirmed the scoreline at the time of interruption (0-0), they also handed down sanctions against Nantes for the disturbances.
Sanctions imposed on FC Nantes
The LFP’s disciplinary measures include:
- A one-match closed-door fixture at the Beaujoire stadium;
- Suspension of the Loire stand for two additional matches, the same section from which the pitch invasion originated.
Crucially, the club avoided more severe sporting penalties, such as point deductions, which could have further jeopardized their Ligue 2 campaign next season.
Toulouse FC’s best-ever finish under new ownership
The decision ensures Toulouse FC (TFC) secures a ninth-place finish with 45 points—tying Lorient but surpassing them on goal difference (+3 vs. -1). This marks the club’s highest-ever league position since the RedBird Capital investment reshaped the team’s trajectory. Though Strasbourg (53 points, 8th) remains out of reach, the outcome allows TFC to maintain their upward momentum, a trend that has defined their recent seasons.
The LFP stated: “After reviewing the investigation report, the Commission has definitively validated the score recorded on the field at the time of the definitive abandonment of the match (0-0).” The ruling underscores the authority’s preference for preserving in-game results in cases of fan-driven interruptions, barring exceptional circumstances.
