The Trump administration has announced a major shift in visa issuance policy, effective as of June 2026, which will significantly impact travelers from several African nations including Gabon.

Under the new regulations, the United States will drastically reduce the number of African countries authorized to process visa applications. Previously, around fifty African nations handled these procedures; now, only a limited selection will remain operational.

The stated objective behind this decision is to combat illegal immigration flows into the country. For Gabonese citizens or residents seeking to travel to the US, this means a mandatory detour to neighboring countries with visa processing capabilities. The closest authorized destinations for Gabonese applicants will be Cameroon (Yaoundé), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Kinshasa), and Togo (Lomé).

This policy change comes with substantial financial implications. Applicants will now need to budget for international flights and extended stays in these transit countries, adding significant costs to what was previously a straightforward application process.
