The Front for the Defense of Democracy and the Republic (FDR) has responded sharply to the Constitutional Council’s decision reinstating Ousmane Sonko as a member of parliament. In a Thursday statement, the opposition coalition argued that the ruling does not resolve the ongoing political controversy surrounding the former Prime Minister’s return to his seat.

The FDR acknowledged the Council’s decision to declare itself incompetent on the matter of forfeiture claims, but stressed that this does not invalidate the broader criticisms directed at Sonko’s reinstatement. The coalition continues to challenge both Sonko and the ruling party, accusing them of fostering an environment of “incompetence” and “arrogance” within the country.

Criticism also extends to recent statements made by Sonko in international media interviews, which the FDR claims reflect a flawed understanding of national identity. The coalition asserts that Senegal is currently facing a troubling period, warning of dangerous deviations within the government’s conduct. Despite this, the FDR reaffirms its commitment to pursuing change through democratic institutions and adherence to the law.

Beyond the Sonko case, the FDR is calling for a broad alliance of political and social forces opposed to the current administration. The coalition is urging political parties, civil society organizations, labor unions, youth movements, and pro-democracy advocates to unite in forming a formidable front. The goal, as outlined in their statement, is to present a compelling alternative to the existing government.

This declaration follows the Constitutional Council’s dismissal of legal challenges against Sonko’s parliamentary reinstatement, effectively ending the opposition’s legal battle over the issue.
