The Malian judiciary has delivered a heavy sentence of 20 years in prison to a French national identified as an intelligence operative with diplomatic credentials. Yann V., who has been in custody in Bamako since mid-August 2025, was found guilty of compromising state security.
This ruling was issued this Thursday by the criminal chamber of the specialized unit for combating terrorism. In addition to the lengthy jail term, the court imposed a 20-year ban on his presence in Mali and a fine of approximately 5,400 euros.
The individual’s arrest occurred on August 13, 2025, during a targeted operation by the State Security services. While officially serving at the French embassy in Bamako, he was apprehended alongside several members of the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa).
The implicated Malian soldiers, who were dismissed from the military following their detention, face allegations of involvement in an espionage network. This group is accused of plotting to undermine the transitional government and orchestrating a coup attempt, though their specific legal proceedings are still pending.
France has firmly dismissed these allegations as baseless. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to the verdict by maintaining that the agent was involved in legitimate security cooperation. Paris insists it has played no part in any efforts to destabilize the Malian state.
This judicial case has intensified the diplomatic rift between the two nations. Following the initial arrest, France halted its counter-terrorism partnership with Mali and ordered the departure of two Malian diplomats from French soil.
Relations between Bamako and Paris have spiraled downward since the military transitions in 2020 and 2021. Malian leadership has shifted away from Western alliances, particularly with France, in favor of deeper security and political ties with Russia.
