England vs Argentina: dramatic world cup semifinal thriller ends 2-1
The clash between England and Argentina delivered all the ingredients of a classic rivalry: fierce competition, palpable tension, and high stakes. At the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, the Three Lions and Albiceleste faced off in a high-pressure semifinal showdown.
From an intense opening with tight defensive structures to a second half bursting with scoring chances, the match unfolded in multiple acts, each packed with drama and unpredictability.
A frantic first half
After mutual anthem boos, the intensity was immediate. Referee Ismail Elfath had his hands full early on, as fouls piled up and tempers flared. Enzo Fernandez’s elbow to Elliot Anderson’s neck in the third minute set the tone for a physical opening.
A total of 19 fouls were called in the first half, along with two yellow cards, including one for Anderson for a challenge on Lionel Messi.
Football action was scarce, with only three shots recorded in the opening period, the first arriving in the 33rd minute. None were on target.
Gordon’s breakthrough
The second half told a different story. Both teams grew more assertive, exploiting defensive lapses from their opponents. England struck first when Declan Rice found Morgan Rogers on the right flank. Rogers delivered a pinpoint cross that Anthony Gordon met at the back post to open the scoring.
It marked Gordon’s first World Cup goal, capping off a stellar performance for the 25-year-old winger, who had recently completed a high-profile transfer to FC Barcelona from Newcastle.
Defensive heroics and a touch of luck
After their goal, England retreated into a defensive shell, allowing Argentina to dictate play. Standout defensive interventions, including a crucial sliding tackle by Djed Spence on Giuliano Simeone and a stunning goal-line save by Jordan Pickford to deny Nico Gonzalez’s header, defined the final 30 minutes.
The drama continued with Alexis Mac Allister’s diving header striking the post and another Gonzalez header narrowly missing the target before a tight offside call went against Argentina.
Fernandez’s thunderbolt and Martinez’s redemption
Just when it seemed Argentina’s fate was sealed, Enzo Fernandez produced a moment of magic in the 85th minute. From 20 yards out, the Chelsea midfielder unleashed a curling strike that Pickford couldn’t keep out.
The Albiceleste pushed forward relentlessly, piling pressure on England’s compact but disorganized defense. After another Mac Allister effort hit the woodwork, Lionel Messi orchestrated the winning move. The captain drifted right before delivering a precise cross to Lautaro Martinez, who nodded in the decisive goal in the 92nd minute.
Argentina will now face Spain in the final after the Europeans eliminated France in their semifinal. The showdown is set for Sunday at 9 PM Paris time at the MetLife Stadium in New York.
