The city of Antananarivo recently served as the backdrop for the 66th anniversary of the Republic of Madagascar’s independence. The official ceremonies, which included both military and civil parades, brought together various international delegations. Representing President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, the Vice President of the Gabonese government, Hermann Immongault, attended the festivities and was subsequently received in an audience by the Malagasy President, Michaël Randrianirina.

During this diplomatic encounter, Hermann Immongault delivered a formal message from the Gabonese Head of State to his counterpart. “Madagascar and Gabon maintain excellent relations. I was the bearer of an official message from the Head of State to his peer,” he stated following the meeting. He also noted that President Randrianirina recalled his recent visit to Libreville and expressed a strong desire to further solidify bilateral cooperation. Both nations see significant potential for growth in the maritime, economic, and institutional sectors.

Strategic exchange of governance expertise

As active members of the African Union, Gabon and Madagascar share common interests regarding governance, institutional stability, and South-South cooperation. The Vice President highlighted that both countries have navigated similar political challenges, including periods of suspension from continental organizations during political transitions. Consequently, Libreville is prepared to share its experience with the Malagasy authorities, particularly through its role as a member of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council.

Hermann Immongault indicated that the Malagasy leader showed a keen interest in the Gabonese model of transition management, looking to identify lessons that could be adapted to the local context. This alignment of perspectives reflects a mutual commitment to building a partnership based on shared knowledge and political collaboration. The national holiday celebrations provided a strategic opportunity to reaffirm the friendship between Libreville and Antananarivo, while strengthening their joint dedication to continental stability and bilateral progress.
