President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema recently welcomed a joint mission from the African Union and the United Nations. The delegation arrived in Libreville to gain insights from Gabon’s experience in political transition and institutional restructuring. This collaborative effort is specifically aimed at supporting the ongoing process in Madagascar, which is being steered by President Michaël Randrianirina.
Gabon continues to leverage its successful return to constitutional governance. The joint African Union and United Nations mission, led by Mohamed Idrissa Farah and Parfait Onanga-Anyanga, engaged with Head of State Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema to discuss the valuable lessons learned from Gabon’s transitional period.
This significant meeting takes place as Madagascar embarks on its own journey of institutional renewal. The island nation seeks to draw upon the Gabonese model, particularly regarding national dialogue, comprehensive institutional reforms, and the organization of credible electoral processes.
A transition hailed as a paradigm of stability
During the discussions, the President of the Republic outlined the fundamental principles that underpinned Gabon’s transition: a commitment to inclusivity, strict adherence to the established timeline, a broad-based national dialogue, and the crucial preservation of peace and social cohesion.
These guiding principles, as affirmed by Gabonese authorities, facilitated the conduct of free and transparent elections, ultimately cementing the nation’s return to constitutional order and the re-establishment of republican institutions.
Madagascar’s path toward refoundation
The AU-UN mission also aligns with the proactive initiatives underway in Antananarivo, where President Michaël Randrianirina is spearheading a comprehensive refoundation process. This includes constitutional reform, an inclusive national dialogue, and upcoming electoral milestones.
By choosing Libreville as the venue for these crucial exchanges, both the African Union and the United Nations acknowledge Gabon’s significant strides and actively promote the sharing of best practices among African states navigating their own institutional transitions.
