The Communications Cell of the Haut-Uele Provincial Government swiftly responded to allegations suggesting Governor Jean Bakomito Gambu’s alleged complicity with Corneille Nangaa. Below is the full statement issued by Muammar Awoni, head of the Cellcom.
In reaction to the article titled “Is Isiro’s unrest linked to Jean Bakomito’s alleged support for Corneille Nangaa?”, the Haut-Uele provincial government addressed the claims with a detailed rebuttal. Here is the complete response from the Communications Cell:
Official Denial of Alleged Economic Paralysis
Contrary to reports suggesting a shutdown of economic activities in Isiro on June 17, 2026, no such paralysis occurred. A thorough verification with local stakeholders confirms that these claims lack factual basis. Similarly, the article implied a lack of schooling, yet the academic calendar places most schools in their final term by June, making this assertion equally unfounded. Additionally, no public demonstration took place in Isiro on the specified date.
Questioning the Basis of Allegations
The article questions Governor Bakomito’s alleged proximity to Corneille Nangaa. However, the governor has consistently demonstrated his commitment to peace and stability across Haut-Uele. As a prominent leader in the Greater Orientale region, he has actively mobilized communities against destabilizing forces, including those aligned with Paul Kagame—of which Nangaa is accused by many Congolese of being a key figure in the violence that has claimed thousands of lives in Eastern DRC through M23/AFC attacks.
Under Bakomito’s leadership, urban banditry in Isiro has been curbed, with no major security incidents reported recently. In Watsa, particularly Mungbere, where ADF incursions were reported, security operations remain under control thanks to the professionalism of the FARDC. The presence of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Intelligence underscores the government’s priority in addressing security challenges. Ongoing military operations aim to restore lasting peace and facilitate the return of displaced populations to their homes.
Strategic Support for National Security
Governor Bakomito has equipped FARDC forces with additional vehicles and logistical resources to enhance operational efficiency in the province. His administration continues to align with President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo’s vision for peace, security, and development in the DRC.
The official statement categorically dismisses the allegations as baseless attempts to tarnish the governor’s reputation. Despite smear campaigns, Bakomito remains steadfast in his mission to protect the province from destabilizing forces and uphold national sovereignty.
