Tense arrest in Ouagadougou

According to close associates and the Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina Faso, Imam Mohamad Ishaq Kindo was taken into custody on Tuesday afternoon by masked police and military officers. The operation, which occurred just before the Muslim celebration of Eid, escalated tensions between security forces and local worshippers. Several injuries were reported during the arrest, and the cleric’s current whereabouts remain undisclosed.

Criticism of a contentious religious bill

Two days prior to his detention, an audio recording widely circulated on social media captured the imam denouncing a newly adopted law from March that seeks to govern religious freedoms in Burkina Faso. In his sermon, Mohamad Ishaq Kindo warned authorities against any attempt to prohibit public prayers and urged leaders to “reflect deeply on the consequences of their actions before proceeding.”

Security forces disperse protest

Within hours of the imam’s arrest, hundreds of supporters gathered in Ouagadougou to demand his release. Witnesses reported that security personnel used tear gas to disperse the crowd. The Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina Faso called on Muslim worshippers to remain calm and avoid further confrontation.
