Ligue 1 disciplinary panel defends Nantes-Toulouse 0-0 ruling

Le 17 mai, après l'envahissement de terrain des supporters nantais, le match Nantes-Toulouse avait été interrompu à la 22e minute.
On May 17, Nantes-Toulouse was halted at the 22nd minute following an invasion by Nantes supporters.

Sébastien Deneux, chair of the Ligue 1 disciplinary committee, explains the decision to uphold the 0-0 score in the abandoned Nantes-Toulouse match.

The May 17 Ligue 1 finale between Nantes and Toulouse was cut short after Nantes fans stormed the pitch, prompting the visiting Toulouse side to criticize the disciplinary committee’s decision to confirm the goalless draw. Toulouse FC hinted at a potential appeal, arguing the result should have been awarded to them.

« We lament that the match could not conclude under normal circumstances and question what concrete measures the club could have taken to allow play to resume. We remain vigilant about the potential precedents this decision might set for the future, » Toulouse FC stated in a released statement. The club had hoped for a 3-0 forfeit victory.

Why the 0-0 score was confirmed

« The decision to uphold the score, given that Nantes and its supporters were responsible for the abandonment, raises significant questions. »

Deneux emphasized that the disciplinary rules were revised two years ago to separate sporting outcomes from disciplinary sanctions. Crucially, the May 17 match carried no sporting stakes for either side at the point of interruption: Nantes was already relegated, and Toulouse’s league position—whether they won or drew—would leave them in 9th place with 45 or 47 points. Thus, the disciplinary consequence of a forfeit loss versus an upheld score had identical sporting implications.

« It is absolutely unacceptable for clubs or supporters to attempt to influence match outcomes through abandonment and expect to gain any sporting advantage. »

This case highlighted the disciplinary committee’s intent to avoid « windfall » scenarios where a club might benefit from opponent misconduct to gain an undeserved sporting edge.

Addressing potential future risks

« Could this decision set a dangerous precedent? »

Deneux dismissed such concerns, stressing that the decision hinged on the absence of sporting impact. In any other scenario, the committee would have taken a different approach. Disciplinary measures exist to prevent clubs or supporters from manipulating match outcomes through abandonment. Vigilance on this front remains unwavering.
