The Minister of Land Planning, Urban Development, and Housing recently unveiled the outcomes of Chad’s engagement at the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13) held in Baku, Azerbaijan. The results were shared during an official debriefing session at the ministry, attended by key stakeholders involved in the mission.
The Chadian delegation, led by the minister, included the Deputy Mayor of N’Djamena, officials from the National Housing and Public Works Company (SOPROFIM), and representatives from UN-Habitat. Discussions at the forum focused on critical urban challenges, including sustainable housing, resilient city planning, and climate adaptation strategies for urban areas.
The minister highlighted that Chad’s participation significantly boosted the country’s profile in global urban development dialogues, particularly in shaping policies for African cities. A dedicated pavilion showcased Chad’s national initiatives in urban planning and housing, offering a platform for international collaboration and knowledge exchange.
One of the most notable outcomes was the confirmation of an upcoming official visit by the UN-Habitat Executive Director, scheduled for September 9–11, 2026. This visit will provide an in-depth assessment of Chad’s urban landscape and assess multiple project proposals submitted by national authorities.
Additionally, the minister announced Chad’s inclusion in the top ten countries eligible for the UN Green Climate Fund, supported by Kenya’s advocacy. This milestone could unlock substantial financing for urban resilience projects, particularly those addressing flood mitigation and climate-proof infrastructure.
During the forum, Chad engaged in strategic discussions with Kenya and Morocco to forge new partnerships in urbanization, social housing, and informal settlement upgrading. These collaborations may lead to joint missions, knowledge-sharing initiatives, and cooperative projects in the coming months.
The minister emphasized that these developments mark a turning point for Chad, offering tangible pathways to convert international opportunities into structured, long-term urban development projects that directly benefit local communities.
By actively participating in WUF13, Chad reaffirms its commitment to fostering inclusive, sustainable, and climate-resilient urban growth, aligning with the strategic vision outlined by the President of the Republic, His Excellency Marshal Idriss Déby Itno.
