The final day of the Ligue 1 season was marred by serious pitch invasions, disrupting two key fixtures and casting a shadow over the closing fixtures of the campaign.
Across France, the last round of league matches saw Nantes and Nice endure chaotic scenes as fans took matters into their own hands. Sunday evening’s fixtures were particularly volatile, with disgruntled supporters storming the pitch in both stadiums.
In Nice, the match against Metz saw ultras breach security barriers late in the game. Police forces, including CRS units, intervened to restore order, but the damage was done—fans had already made their presence felt.
The situation escalated dramatically in Nantes, where the home side, already relegated to Ligue 2, faced Toulouse at the Stade de la Beaujoire. The game took a dramatic turn in the 22nd minute when dozens of Nantes supporters—many wearing hoods—stormed the pitch, forcing players to retreat to the dressing rooms. The match was abandoned after 40 minutes of disruption.
“This is disgraceful”
The abrupt end to the fixture was a bitter blow for Vahid Halilhodžić, who was coaching his final match before retiring. The experienced tactician expressed his frustration at the actions of the fans, many of whom were left reeling from relegation.
“This is disgraceful,” Halilhodžić stated. “I wanted to go to the supporters to tell them to stop. I understand their frustration, but this is beyond unacceptable. I’ve given everything as a coach and as a person. Unfortunately, the reality is harsh.”
The Ligue de Football Professionnel has yet to issue an official statement but has launched an investigation. The FC Nantes now faces severe consequences, including potential point deductions in next season’s Ligue 2 campaign. A similar penalty was imposed on Saint-Étienne four years ago following comparable incidents, resulting in a six-point deduction before the season even began.
