The Malian army has declared a significant shift in the conflict, stating it has reclaimed the upper hand in all combat zones targeted by attacks from the Azawad Liberation Front in the north and the al-Qaeda-affiliated Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims in central and southern Mali.
Military operations intensify in northeastern Mali
In a formal statement, the Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) confirmed that fighting persisted on Sunday in the town of Anifif, located in the northeast—roughly 110 kilometers south of Kidal—following the arrival of reinforcements for the Azawad Liberation Front.
The military communiqué emphasized the resolve of FAMA units, noting: “Confronted by these pressures, our troops demonstrated unwavering determination and discipline, engaging in sustained combat throughout the day with courage and strategic precision.”
Confidence in national defense capabilities
Emphasizing their commitment to safeguarding Mali’s unity and territorial integrity, the statement reaffirmed the army’s full confidence in its ability to protect civilians and defeat hostile forces. “The Malian Armed Forces remain steadfast in their mission to defend the nation and ensure the security of its people,” the communiqué declared.
Separatist group denies leadership claims
In response to reports circulating about the status of their leadership, the Azawad Liberation Front’s spokesperson, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, dismissed claims regarding the death of its leader, Mbarek Ag Akli. He asserted that Ag Akli continues to oversee military operations in northern Mali, underscoring the group’s operational continuity.
