Morocco-Philippines trade growth surges by half in five decades

The Philippine Ambassador to Rabat, Leslie Baja, highlighted a remarkable surge in bilateral trade between Morocco and the Philippines over recent years, with exchanges climbing nearly 50 percent—though still falling short of both nations’ expectations.

The foundations of Morocco-Philippines relations stretch back half a century, built on high-level exchanges, landmark agreements, and strong people-to-people ties that Ambassador Leslie Baja calls the “bedrock” of future cooperation between the two nations.

Speaking on the enduring partnership, he noted that while trade between the countries has grown by about 50 percent in recent years, there remains significant untapped potential in areas like agro-industry, aeronautics, electronics, and textiles. The Philippines ranks among Morocco’s top buyers of phosphate, a key resource for the Southeast Asian nation’s agricultural sector.

The Ambassador emphasized the strategic value of Morocco as a gateway to Africa and Europe, and the Philippines as a dynamic member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), whose combined strengths could unlock new economic opportunities. He pointed to the 2023 Morocco-ASEAN sectoral partnership agreement as a major step toward deeper collaboration, both bilaterally and across the wider region.

On regional integration, Baja praised Morocco’s Atlantic Initiative, which aims to give Sahelian states access to the Atlantic Ocean, comparing its potential impact to the ASEAN model of cooperation. “Regional integration in Africa will drive economic growth, political stability, and cultural prosperity,” he stated.

He also reaffirmed the Philippines’ support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for the Southern Provinces, calling it a “solid foundation” for resolving the dispute. The Ambassador welcomed the United Nations Security Council’s Resolution 2797 as a turning point and expressed hope for progress in the UN-led political process.

To mark five decades of diplomatic ties, a new book tracing the history of Morocco-Philippines relations will be unveiled. More than a historical record, the publication highlights the human connections that have shaped bilateral ties and fostered mutual understanding between the two peoples.
