Morocco has once again demonstrated its firm dedication to a diplomatic resolution in Libya during a recent session of the African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC).
Speaking at the AU PSC assembly regarding the Libyan situation, Mohamed Arrouchi, the Moroccan Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the African Union and the UN Economic Commission for Africa, emphasized the Kingdom’s support for national reconciliation efforts. He highlighted the necessity of inter-Libyan dialogue to foster consensus and secure meaningful progress among all domestic stakeholders.
The diplomat pointed out that the Skhirat Agreement, established on December 17, 2015, under United Nations guidance, continues to serve as a vital and credible framework for a lasting political solution. He urged for the protection of Libya’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and national unity as the essential foundations for enduring peace.
Furthermore, the Moroccan delegation conveyed the Kingdom’s high regard, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, for the African Union’s persistent work in maintaining security and stability across the continent, specifically through initiatives aimed at resolving the Libyan crisis politically.
Ambassador Arrouchi also referenced the significant discussions held in Tripoli and Zenten. These talks led to the signing of a pivotal agreement in the Libyan capital on January 7, 2026, between representatives of the Government of National Unity and the administration in the East.
The Moroccan representative underscored the Kingdom’s ongoing role in facilitating the Libyan political process. By acting as a trusted mediator, Morocco continues to bridge the gap between various parties who rely on the Kingdom’s neutral and constructive involvement.
These diplomatic efforts are rooted in international legality and align with the principles of the Skhirat Agreement and the Bouznika understandings. The primary goal remains a Libyan-led solution that satisfies all parties involved, with Morocco stressing that a political settlement must be prioritized over any military interventions.
