Benin welcomes new president after decade under Patrice Talon

Romuald Wadagni took the oath of office on Sunday, May 24, in Cotonou, marking the official start of his presidency. The former Finance Minister, who secured over 94% of the vote in April’s election, now leads Benin into a new seven-year term after succeeding his political mentor, Patrice Talon.

Transition of power and economic promises

At 49 years old, Wadagni inherits a nation shaped by Talon’s decade-long leadership, particularly in economic reforms he helped design. In his inaugural address, he paid tribute to his predecessor before vowing to make growth “tangible in the daily lives of citizens.”

Security challenges and regional cooperation

The new president faces pressing security threats, including the rising jihadist activity in northern Benin. Wadagni pledged a “firm” state response while emphasizing the need for strengthened collaboration with neighboring countries in the Sahel region.

His first days in office also signaled diplomatic thawing. Notably, Niger’s Prime Minister, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, attended the ceremony amid warm applause, while Burkina Faso and Mali sent their foreign ministers. This gathering underscored efforts to rebuild regional ties.

Scrutiny over public freedoms

Wadagni’s early decisions regarding public and press freedoms will be closely monitored. Several human rights groups have criticized the outgoing administration for tightening political and media restrictions, raising expectations for a more open governance style.
