Nice handed harsh penalty before Saint-Étienne playoff showdown

The stakes couldn’t be higher for Nice ahead of their critical Ligue 1 relegation playoff tie against Saint-Étienne. The club’s disciplinary record took another hit on Wednesday as the LFP handed down sanctions following the chaotic scenes at Allianz Riviera last Sunday.

After a dismal goalless draw with Metz sealed the Aiglons’ fate, unrest erupted among supporters. A section of the crowd invaded the pitch, hurled flares, and caused significant damage to the stadium. The LFP responded swiftly, imposing severe penalties on the Côte d’Azur club.

Harsh sanctions for Nice before playoff showdown

In a decision that will further complicate Nice’s already fragile playoff prospects, the LFP has ruled that the club must play their upcoming matches behind closed doors. Specifically, two games at Allianz Riviera will be held without spectators, including the second leg of the playoff against Saint-Étienne on May 29. The first leg in Saint-Étienne on May 26 will still allow fans, but Nice’s home advantage will be significantly diminished.

To make matters worse, the club faces the possibility of losing key international players for these decisive fixtures. FIFA has reportedly denied Nice’s appeal to field players called up for the upcoming World Cup, meaning the Aiglons may have to navigate the playoffs without their star talents.

A double setback for Nice

These sanctions arrive at a critical juncture for Nice, who are now battling to secure their Ligue 1 status. The absence of fans and potential top players could prove decisive in the high-stakes playoffs against Saint-Étienne. The club’s management will need to regroup quickly to address both the disciplinary and logistical challenges ahead.
