During a recent interview, Ousmane Sonko, leader of Senegal’s Pastef party and current Speaker of the National Assembly, addressed speculation about his potential run in the 2029 presidential election. His response was measured and strategic, avoiding definitive commitments while acknowledging the political landscape.

When questioned about whether he would inevitably contest the election, Sonko emphasized the premature nature of such discussions. «There is a lot of chatter about my candidacy, but I prefer to wait. My party will decide who it endorses as its candidate, and we are not there yet, he stated. This stance reflects both caution and party discipline, as Senegal’s political parties typically finalize their choices long before election years.

Sonko also dismissed inquiries about President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s potential reelection bid. «He has his path to follow, just as I have mine. Speculating on his candidacy isn’t my concern, he remarked, signaling a clear separation between his ambitions and those of the sitting president. His comments suggest a focus on his own political trajectory rather than reacting to external narratives.
