Senegal’s president reshuffles air force command
In a decisive move to strengthen the nation’s aerial defense capabilities, President Bassirou Diomaye has appointed Brigadier General Pape Cissé as the new Chief of Staff of the Senegalese Air Force (CEMAIR). This strategic appointment, effective from May 1, 2026, signals a new chapter in the country’s military leadership.
The decree formalizing this transition was issued on the same day, underscoring the government’s commitment to modernizing and reinforcing Senegal’s defense infrastructure. The reshuffle places General Cissé at the helm of the Air Force, succeeding Brigadier General Elhadj Niang, who had led the institution since 2023.
Before his elevation to the top military position, General Cissé served as the commander of the Presidential Squadron, a role that demanded precision, leadership, and unwavering dedication to national security. His deep understanding of aerial operations and strategic vision have positioned him as a key figure in Senegal’s defense strategy.
The leadership change comes at a time when regional security dynamics continue to evolve, making this appointment a critical step in ensuring the nation’s preparedness and responsiveness in the face of emerging challenges.
