Senegal parliament elects Ousmane Sonko as new president

Just four days after being removed from the position of Prime Minister, political leader Ousmane Sonko has been elected President of Senegal’s National Assembly.

Ousmane Sonko, leader of the ruling Patriotic Africans for Work, Ethics and Fraternity (PASTEF) party, secured 132 votes out of 133 cast in the election held this Tuesday. He now assumes the role previously held by El Malick Ndiaye, who stepped down on Sunday.

This landmark vote comes just days after President Bassirou Diomaye Faye dismissed Sonko from his position as Prime Minister on Friday. The move reshuffled the government and set the stage for this parliamentary milestone.

Following Sonko’s election, President Faye appointed Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô as the new Prime Minister on Monday evening. Lô brings extensive experience to the role, having previously served as the Minister in charge of monitoring and evaluating the ‘National Senegal 2050 Transformation Program’ and later as Secretary-General of the government.
