Dakar, May 20 — The Senegalese Prime Minister has issued a strong call to action for ministers responsible for flood prevention, urging them to implement critical measures ahead of the upcoming rainy season.
During Wednesday’s Council of Ministers meeting, Ousmane Sonko delivered precise instructions to cabinet members tasked with flood preparedness. The Prime Minister emphasized the need for immediate action, including updating and validating all municipal emergency plans, verifying the functionality of early warning systems, and ensuring seamless communication channels.
In a further push for readiness, Sonko stressed the importance of pre-positioning intervention resources and organizing a cross-ministerial simulation exercise by June 15, 2026.
The Head of Government also commended the proactive efforts already underway by the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation, along with other state services. Key initiatives include clearing drainage networks, inspecting water infrastructure, deploying pumps in high-risk zones, and finalizing emergency response strategies.
Highlighting the interministerial nature of flood prevention, Sonko underscored the necessity for unified coordination. He mandated that all government agencies collaborate seamlessly under the supervision of the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation, with the Ministry of the Interior supporting civil protection and crisis management components.
